SMOKESCREEN PREMIERES AT THE Q

February 5, 2022

My new play, Smokescreen, a sharp-shooting alpha-male showdown about the dark arts of manipulating the message, had its world premiere at The Q, in Queanbeyan, this February. As well as having written it, I was directing, and acting in it - though thankfully, not on my own this time: I was joined on-stage by Damon Baudin, an excellent young Canberran actor, currently training at VCA, who rose to the mighty challenge of the role.

I wrote the play during the first lockdown in 2020, during my residency at Belconnen Arts Centre, with funding for the project thanks to artsACT Homefront covid-relief grants for artists. The production of the show is part of a great new initiative by The Q to offer a platform to new, local, independent work, and Smokescreen was selected as one of three from over 40 applicants.

I was delighted with how the production went, and it's been a fantastic encouragement for my work as a writer. We had a blast performing it, too, and are eager to take the show elsewhere in the year ahead.
